How to become a sheet metal worker in Ontario
You become a sheet metal worker in Ontario through an apprenticeship — paid, on-the-job training with in-school levels, finishing with the 308A (full scope) or 308R (residential low-rise) Certificate of Qualification. You earn from day one, typically starting around half of journeyperson rate and stepping up each level.

The path, step by step

Line up a sponsor
An apprenticeship needs an employer or union training centre willing to register and train you. For this trade that usually means a sheet metal or HVAC contractor, or the SMART union training centre. Cold-calling shops with a resume and any safety tickets (WHMIS, Working at Heights) in hand still works — contractors are chronically short of apprentices.

Register the apprenticeship
You and your sponsor sign a training agreement through Ontario's apprenticeship system, and you register with Skilled Trades Ontario. Registration is what makes your hours count.

Do the hours and the school
Complete the on-the-job hours and in-school levels for the trade — about 5 years for 308A; 308R is a shorter residential stream. The in-school blocks run at colleges and union training centres; you alternate between earning on site and learning in class.

The real picture
Sheet metal splits two ways people don't expect — the shop and the field, and HVAC ducting versus architectural metal. The questions follow: shop fabrication or field install, duct work or custom cladding, union (SMART) or not, and whether to chase the detailing/CAD side off the tools. It's a precision trade hiding inside a dirty one.

Shop vs field
Shop fabrication
CNC plasma, brakes, and layout — indoor, precision work building the duct and metal. Cleaner and more craft-focused.
Best for: People who like fabrication and working with their head as much as their hands.
Field installation
Hanging duct, rooftop units, and site install — physical, varied, and customer-facing on the service side.
Best for: People who want to be out on site, not in a shop.
HVAC duct vs architectural
HVAC / ductwork
The bread and butter — commercial ducting and residential install (308R). Pairs with the HVAC mechanical trades.
Best for: People who want the highest-volume, steadiest work.
Architectural sheet metal
Cladding, flashings, standing-seam, and custom metal — building-envelope-adjacent finish craft.
Best for: People who want the higher-skill, finish-end niche.
Getting in
Through the 308A apprenticeship with a sheet metal/HVAC contractor or the SMART union. It's a compulsory trade. The residential stream (308R) is a shorter route focused on home HVAC ducting; 308A is the full scope including commercial and architectural work.
Where it leads (and the way out)
The standout off-tools move is detailing/CAD — sheet metal detailers who can model duct and coordinate in BIM are well paid and out of the weather. Beyond that: estimating, shop or field foreman, superintendent, or owning a sheet metal/HVAC business. The fabrication-and-layout brain transfers straight into the design side.
