How to become a low-voltage technician in Ontario

Low-voltage is the fast lane into electrical-adjacent work: no five-year apprenticeship gate for most of it. You learn structured cabling, cameras, and access control on the job or through BICSI training, and you can be running your own installs within a couple of years.

The path, step by step

    Get hired pulling cable

    Structured-cabling and security companies hire entry-level constantly. Terminating, testing, and dressing cable properly is the craft floor — learn it fast.

    Train and certify (BICSI)

    BICSI Installer then Technician certifications are the recognized cabling credentials; manufacturer certs (camera/access-control platforms) stack on top.

    Learn the licensing boundary

    Know exactly where low-voltage ends and licensed electrical begins — power connections and certain life-safety work need a licensed electrician. Respecting that line keeps you legal and tells clients you are a pro.

    Build toward systems and contracts
