How to become a fire alarm technician in Ontario

Fire alarm techs come from two directions: electricians who specialize, and electronics-minded people who enter through the CFAA program into the testing side. Either way, the CFAA registration and ULC standards fluency are the trade.

The path, step by step

    Start from an electrical or electronics base

    A 309A background, an electronics technician diploma, or low-voltage experience all feed into fire alarm work.

    The Canadian Fire Alarm Association's Fire Alarm Technology courses and registration qualify you to inspect, test, and verify systems to ULC S536/S537.

The installation wiring needs an electrical contractor (ECRA/ESA); the inspection and verification need the CFAA registration.
