How to become a structural engineer in Ontario

You become a structural engineer by getting your P.Eng (the licensure path is shared by all engineers — see the Professional Engineer playbook) and specializing in structural design. The specialization happens through your degree focus and supervised structural experience.

The path, step by step

    Earn an accredited civil/structural engineering degree

    A CEAB-accredited civil engineering degree with a structural focus (or a structural specialization) is the foundation. This is where the structural mechanics, steel, concrete, and timber design grounding starts.

    Get structural design experience as an EIT

    Work under licensed structural engineers as an Engineering Intern — analysis, drawings, and connection design across steel, concrete, and wood. Structural competence is built on real building projects.

    Earn your P.Eng

    Complete the experience and competency requirements and the National Professional Practice Exam, then get licensed by PEO. (The full licensure mechanics are in the Professional Engineer playbook.)

    Build structural specialty depth

    Seismic design, building-restoration/assessment, CWB-related steel knowledge, and Part 4 Building Code fluency are what differentiate a structural practice. Many add restoration and forensic work over time.

The real picture

Structural is the prestige engineering discipline and the one carrying the heaviest responsibility — your name on the stamp means the building stands up. The questions: is the pay worth the liability and the hours, buildings vs bridges vs restoration, how office-bound it really is, and why a master's is more or less expected. It's more code-and-software than heroic hand calculation, and that surprises people.

What you design

Buildings

The bulk of the work — steel, concrete, and wood structures, working with architects and developers under Part 4 of the Building Code.

Best for: People who want the steadiest, most plentiful structural work.

Bridges / infrastructure

Heavy civil structural for public clients and MTO — bigger, more specialized, longer projects.

Best for: People who want large public infrastructure.

Restoration / forensic

Assessing and fixing existing structures, parking garages, and failures — a growing, less-saturated, higher-margin niche.

Best for: Engineers who want a specialty with less competition.

Office vs site

Mostly office

Modelling, drawings, and calculations dominate, with site visits for structural reviews and inspections. Less field time than civil or geotech — if you want to be outdoors, this isn't the discipline.

Best for: People who like deep analytical desk work.

Getting in

A civil engineering degree with a structural focus (or a structural master's, which is commonly expected) → EIT under structural engineers → P.Eng. The master's isn't strictly required, but in a competitive structural market most serious candidates have one, and it shortens the climb to taking real design responsibility.

Where it leads (and the way out)

Senior/principal, a restoration or forensic specialty (the smart, less-saturated move), your own structural firm, or laterally into construction, fabrication, or development where structural judgment is prized. Restoration in particular is where a lot of veteran structurals go — steady demand, interesting problem-solving, and less of the new-build deadline grind.
