Professional Engineer

Licensed profession, reserved title

The P.Eng licence from Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is what lets you call yourself an engineer, take responsibility for engineering work, and stamp drawings. One licence covers all disciplines — civil, structural, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical, transportation — with you responsible for working only within your competence. The credential, explained

Engineering is self-regulated under the Professional Engineers Act, and "professional engineer" / "P.Eng" is a reserved title. Licensure through PEO requires an accredited engineering degree (or equivalent assessment), engineering experience assessed through a competency-based model, the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE), and good character. To offer engineering services to the public you also need a PEO Certificate of Authorization for your firm.

Insurance to expect

Professional liability (errors & omissions) insurance is the core coverage — PEO requires licence holders to disclose whether they carry it. Engineering errors carry significant public-safety and financial exposure, so E&O limits are typically higher than for non-design trades.
