MEP consulting or industry mechanical engineering?

They're different careers. Building-services (MEP) consulting designs the HVAC, plumbing, and fire systems for buildings, with architects and developers — project-based, coordination-heavy, and the path to owning an MEP firm. Industry/manufacturing designs products, plants, and equipment in-house, often with steadier hours. If you want to work on the built environment, MEP; if you want to design machines and products, industry.

Is building-services mechanical engineering boring?

It has a reputation for being coordination-and-ductwork heavy, and the routine work can be dry. But the decarbonization wave — energy modelling, net-zero buildings, heat pumps, electrification — has made it one of the more meaningful and future-facing disciplines, and the engineers who lean into the sustainability side find it genuinely engaging. The work is what you make of it, and the green edge is where the interest (and demand) is.

How much site work is there?

Mostly office design and coordination, with site visits for reviews and commissioning. It's more desk-bound than civil or geotech but gets you out for inspections and especially commissioning, where you see whether your design actually performs. If you want heavy field work, this isn't it; if you want analytical design with periodic site involvement, it fits.

Is there demand for mechanical building-services engineers?

Strong and steady — every building needs mechanical systems designed and stamped, and the electrification/energy retrofit wave is adding work, not removing it. MEP is one of the more reliably employed building-services disciplines, and the sustainability crossover is expanding what mechanicals get hired to do.

Mechanical or electrical engineering — which for buildings?

Both are core MEP disciplines with similar pay and strong demand. Mechanical (HVAC, plumbing, fire) has the bigger energy/decarbonization story right now; electrical has the electrification story (EV, solar, storage, smart buildings). Pick by which systems interest you more — many firms hire both and the careers run in parallel. Neither is clearly "better"; they're different flavours of building-systems design.

What's the pay and progression?

Roughly: EITs $60k–75k, P.Engs $85k–105k (Ontario average around $85k), senior engineers $105k–130k, and principals $130k+. It pays at or slightly above the engineering average. The jumps come from seniority, a sustainability/energy specialty, or equity in an MEP firm.

What is a building-services (MEP) mechanical engineer?

A mechanical engineer who designs a building's HVAC, plumbing, and fire-protection systems — the "M" in MEP (mechanical-electrical-plumbing) consulting. They design and stamp the systems; the mechanical trades install them.

Do you need a P.Eng to do mechanical building design?

To stamp mechanical designs and offer them to the public, yes — you need a P.Eng from PEO, practising within your competence. This is distinct from the mechanical trades (plumbers, HVAC techs), who install rather than design-and-stamp.

How do I start a mechanical engineering (MEP) firm?

Hold (or employ) a P.Eng, obtain a PEO Certificate of Authorization with professional liability insurance, and incorporate. MEP work flows from architects and developers, so relationships with design teams — and often pairing mechanical with electrical capability — drive the business.

Should I incorporate or form a professional corporation?

Regulated professionals (architects, engineers) can often form a professional corporation, which carries specific naming and ownership rules and ties to your regulator's firm authorization. Unregulated professionals (quantity surveyors, project managers) incorporate like any business. Either way, incorporating limits personal liability and can reduce tax once you are profitable — confirm the right structure with your regulator first.

What insurance does a professional practice need?

Professional liability (errors & omissions) insurance is the core coverage — it responds to claims from your advice, designs, or certifications, and is a firm-authorization requirement for regulated professions. Add commercial general liability, and cyber/contents coverage for your office.

Do I have to charge HST on professional fees?

Yes — professional services are HST-taxable in Ontario. You must register for and charge HST once revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive quarters, and many register sooner to claim input tax credits on software, equipment, and office costs.
