The path, step by step

Earn a CEAB-accredited mechanical engineering degree
A mechanical engineering degree provides the thermodynamics, fluids, and heat-transfer foundation. Building-services focus comes through electives and on-the-job experience.

Get building-systems design experience as an EIT
Design HVAC, plumbing, and fire-protection systems under licensed engineers — load calculations, equipment selection, ductwork and piping layouts, and code compliance.

ASHRAE fluency, energy modelling, ventilation and smoke-control design, and LEED/green-building credentials differentiate a mechanical practice — and connect well to the sustainability market.

Building-services mechanical — the M in MEP — is steady, in-demand consulting work, and the questions are practical: MEP consulting versus industry/manufacturing, how much you're on site, the energy/sustainability crossover, and whether HVAC-and-plumbing design is as dry as it sounds. (It's coordination-heavy, but the decarbonization wave — heat pumps, net-zero — is making it genuinely interesting.)

Getting in
A mechanical engineering degree → EIT in a building-services (MEP) consultancy → P.Eng. Building-services focus comes mostly on the job rather than from school, so your first firm shapes your specialty. The mechanical degree is broad, so you can also pivot toward industry, energy, or commissioning from the same start.
Where it leads (and the way out)
Senior/principal, commissioning (a natural adjacent move), the sustainability/energy-consulting world, project management, or your own MEP firm. Building-services mechanical is one of the better-connected disciplines for branching out — into commissioning, green building, or even back to industry — because the systems knowledge is broadly applicable.
