How to become a land surveyor in Ontario
You become an Ontario Land Surveyor through a surveying/geomatics education, an articling period under a practising O.L.S., and professional entrance exams. The articling-and-exam stage is the defining part — it is hands-on, supervised, and rigorous.

The path, step by step

Get the academic foundation
You need a bachelor's degree in geomatics or surveying engineering, or equivalent education confirmed by AOLS transcript review. Candidates within a few courses of meeting the academic requirement can proceed and fill the gaps alongside articling.

Article under a practising O.L.S.
You complete an articling period (up to about 1.5 years) working under a licensed Ontario Land Surveyor, gaining the core competencies of cadastral practice. A competency-based assessment can recognize relevant experience you already hold.

Pass the professional entrance exams
At the end of articling you write professional examinations on Ontario survey law, boundary principles, and professional practice. Exams are normally held twice a year (late May and late November); the cadastral branch requires an additional Plan Check exam.

Get licensed as an O.L.S.
On passing, AOLS licenses you as an Ontario Land Surveyor — and you can perform cadastral surveys, sign legal plans, and give boundary opinions under the Surveyors Act.

Field

The scarcity story
A small, aging, protected profession
Ontario has only a few hundred practising O.L.S. holders, many near retirement, and the cadastral monopoly is legislated. Demand (every transaction, severance, and development needs surveys) outstrips licensee supply — which means strong pay, strong job security, and buyers for every retiring practice.
Best for: Anyone wanting a credential with structural scarcity behind it.
Getting in
A geomatics/surveying degree (or equivalent assessed by AOLS) → articling under a practising O.L.S. (up to ~1.5 years) → the professional exams. The bottleneck is real: you need an O.L.S. willing to article you — though the shortage works in your favour, since firms actively recruit articling students as their succession plan. Survey technicians can build toward the licence through the academic-equivalency route.
Where it leads (and the way out)
Ownership is the classic endgame — and unusually attainable, because retiring O.L.S. owners need licensed successors and often sell practices on favourable terms to their articling students. Beyond that: geomatics management, expert-witness boundary work, or the drone/scanning technology side. The licence is the asset; few professions hand you a clearer path to owning the firm.
