About becoming a geotechnical engineer
Both, in sequence: it's field-heavy early — running site investigations, supervising drilling, logging boreholes, often travelling to sites — and shifts toward office analysis, design, and reports as you become senior. If you want an engineering career that gets you outdoors and hands-on for real, geotech is the most field-oriented of the building-related disciplines.
More than in most disciplines, yes — geotech is technical and specialized, and a master's is common (often effectively expected) for design roles. You can enter on a bachelor's and build through field experience, but the analytical depth of a master's is genuinely used here, and many firms prefer it for anyone doing foundation and slope design.
Often a bit lower at the start — entry geotech roles can pay slightly under structural or mechanical — but it catches up and can exceed them later, because experienced geotechs are scarce and the work is hard to commoditize. The early field years are an investment; the senior and specialist (mining, dams, complex foundations) roles pay well.
Early on: out on sites in all weather, directing a drill rig, sampling and logging soils, running or coordinating lab tests, and watching earthworks. Later: interpreting that data, designing foundations and earth-retention, and writing the reports that other engineers build on. It's a satisfying mix of physical fieldwork and analytical design that few disciplines offer.
Yes — and reliably so. Almost every building, road, and major structure needs a geotechnical investigation before design, the expertise is scarce, and the field experience can't be outsourced. That combination gives geotech strong, stable demand and good long-term security, even though it's a smaller, quieter discipline than civil or structural.
Hold your P.Eng, then arrange the investigation capability that defines the business: access to drilling rigs and a soils lab, owned or partnered. Many geotechs start in partnership with a drilling contractor before bringing it in-house. It's more capital-intensive than a pure design consultancy, but the scarcity of good geotechs means a capable firm has a strong, defensible market.
They investigate soil and rock conditions and design what sits on them — foundations, retaining walls, slopes, and excavation support. The work combines field investigation (boreholes, sampling), lab testing, and engineering design, and it precedes almost every building and road.
Yes — geotechnical recommendations and foundation designs offered to the public must come from a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng) practising within their competence. Geoscientists (P.Geo) also work in this space on the earth-science side.
Hold (or employ) a P.Eng, get a PEO Certificate of Authorization with professional liability insurance, and arrange a drilling/field-investigation and soils-testing capability — owned or partnered. Then build relationships with builders, structural engineers, and developers who need investigations before they can design.
Regulated professionals (architects, engineers) can often form a professional corporation, which carries specific naming and ownership rules and ties to your regulator's firm authorization. Unregulated professionals (quantity surveyors, project managers) incorporate like any business. Either way, incorporating limits personal liability and can reduce tax once you are profitable — confirm the right structure with your regulator first.
Professional liability (errors & omissions) insurance is the core coverage — it responds to claims from your advice, designs, or certifications, and is a firm-authorization requirement for regulated professions. Add commercial general liability, and cyber/contents coverage for your office.
Yes — professional services are HST-taxable in Ontario. You must register for and charge HST once revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive quarters, and many register sooner to claim input tax credits on software, equipment, and office costs.
