How to become a geotechnical engineer in Ontario
You become a geotechnical engineer by earning your P.Eng (shared licensure path — see the Professional Engineer playbook) and specializing in soil and foundation engineering. The specialty is learned through site investigations, lab testing, and foundation design.

The path, step by step

Earn a CEAB-accredited civil engineering degree (geotechnical focus)
A civil engineering degree with geotechnical coursework — soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and rock mechanics — is the foundation. Many geotechnical engineers add a master's.

Get field and design experience as an EIT
Run and interpret site investigations, supervise drilling, conduct soils-lab testing, and design foundations under licensed engineers. Geotechnical judgment is built in the field.

Earn your P.Eng

Build the investigation capability
A geotechnical practice usually needs access to drilling rigs and a soils lab. Many start in partnership with drilling contractors before bringing it in-house.
The real picture
Geotech is the discipline you either love or fall into — and the questions reflect its split personality: the field side (boots, boreholes, mud) versus the office (analysis and reports), why it pairs with drilling and a soils lab, and whether the lower starting pay pays off later. (It can — good geotechs are scarce, and the work is hard to offshore.)

Field vs office
Field
Running site investigations, supervising drilling rigs, logging boreholes, and overseeing earthworks — outdoors, hands-on, and travel to sites. This is where you start and how you build judgment.
Best for: People who want to be outside and learn by doing.
Office
Analysis, foundation and slope design, and report writing — the senior trajectory, where the engineering judgment gets applied.

Getting in
A civil engineering degree with geotechnical coursework — and very often a master's, which is more expected here than in most disciplines → EIT, where you'll spend real time in the field on investigations → P.Eng. The field apprenticeship is the point: geotechnical judgment is built standing next to a drill rig, not just at a desk.
Where it leads (and the way out)
Senior/principal, your own geotech firm (paired with drilling and lab capability), or laterally into environmental, mining, or heavy-civil specialties. Because good geotechs are scarce and the field experience is hard to fake, the discipline has strong job security and a clear path to high-value senior and specialist roles — even if the starting pay lags.
