About becoming a geomatics technologist
Yes — but not the way the "make money with your drone" hype implies. The money isn't in owning a drone (everyone does); it's in the surveying knowledge and the data processing — turning flights into accurate topo, volumes, point clouds, and deliverables clients trust for real decisions. The viable businesses serve construction (volumes, progress) and corridors/utilities with recurring work, not one-off real-estate photos. Treat it as a geospatial-services business that uses a drone, not a drone business.
Plenty — topographic surveys, drone mapping, earthwork volumes, 3D scanning, construction layout, and GIS are all open to geomatics technicians. The hard legal line is cadastral work: determining or certifying legal property boundaries and preparing registered plans is reserved exclusively to licensed Ontario Land Surveyors. So you do all the non-boundary work yourself and partner with an O.L.S. for anything that touches legal boundaries. Knowing exactly where that line is keeps you legal and credible.
A Transport Canada RPAS pilot certificate — the Advanced certificate for most survey work, since you'll fly near people or in controlled airspace. That's separate from any surveying credential. For professional credibility on the survey side, the OACETT Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation helps. The RPAS gets you legally in the air; the surveying knowledge and C.E.T. get you hired.
As a geomatics technician you can run a solid services business and earn well, but you're capped below the cadastral work and the licensed ceiling. Becoming a licensed O.L.S. (degree + articling + exams) is a multi-year commitment, but it removes the ceiling entirely — you can then do boundary work, sign plans, and own a full survey practice in a scarce, well-paid profession. Many start as technicians; the ambitious ones use it as the on-ramp to licensure.
Construction and site work is the steadiest — earthwork volumes, topographic surveys, and progress monitoring that builders need repeatedly. Mapping and corridor/utility work (pipelines, rail, transmission) brings bigger jobs and recurring monitoring contracts. Inspection (roofs, towers, structures), agriculture, and real-estate media are lower-barrier and more crowded — fine to start with, but the durable money is in construction and corridor services where accuracy and reliability matter.
The low end (real-estate photos, basic mapping) is crowded, because the barrier is just buying a drone. The professional end — accurate, survey-grade deliverables that construction and engineering clients stake decisions on — is far less crowded, because it requires actual surveying and processing competence most drone owners don't have. Differentiate on accuracy, deliverable quality, and surveying knowledge, and target construction/corridor clients, and the crowding at the bottom is irrelevant.
Not for non-cadastral work. Topographic surveys, drone mapping, volumes, scanning, and GIS can be done by geomatics technologists. But cadastral surveys — legal property boundaries and registered plans — are reserved exclusively to licensed Ontario Land Surveyors, so you partner with an O.L.S. for that.

Regulated professionals (architects, engineers) can often form a professional corporation, which carries specific naming and ownership rules and ties to your regulator's firm authorization. Unregulated professionals (quantity surveyors, project managers) incorporate like any business. Either way, incorporating limits personal liability and can reduce tax once you are profitable — confirm the right structure with your regulator first.
Professional liability (errors & omissions) insurance is the core coverage — it responds to claims from your advice, designs, or certifications, and is a firm-authorization requirement for regulated professions. Add commercial general liability, and cyber/contents coverage for your office.
Yes — professional services are HST-taxable in Ontario. You must register for and charge HST once revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive quarters, and many register sooner to claim input tax credits on software, equipment, and office costs.
