What you can't do without an O.L.S.

Getting in

A geomatics/GIS or survey-technology program (or strong self-taught skills) → a Transport Canada RPAS pilot certificate (Advanced operations for most survey work) → the OACETT C.E.T. designation for credibility → field experience. The drone is the cheap part; the value is in the processing (photogrammetry, point clouds, deliverables) and in knowing surveying, not just flying. Many start as technicians and add the drone/processing skills.

Where it leads (and the way out)

Grow a geospatial-services firm (recurring construction and corridor-monitoring contracts), specialize into reality capture/LiDAR or GIS/data, or — the bigger move — go all the way and become a licensed O.L.S. so you can do the reserved cadastral work too. The technology skills also cross into BIM/VDC (scan-to-BIM), construction layout, and asset management. The licensed surveyor path is the highest ceiling.
