Geomatics & Drone Survey

Professional designation, not a licence

Geomatics and drone-survey businesses capture the world as data — topographic surveys, drone mapping and volumes, 3D laser scanning, and GIS. It is the fast-growing, technology-driven side of surveying, distinct from the cadastral (legal boundary) work reserved to licensed Ontario Land Surveyors.

The credential, explained

Non-cadastral surveying — topographic, construction layout, drone mapping, volumes, scanning, and GIS — does not require a survey licence, so geomatics technologists can run these services. The hard line: cadastral surveys (legal property boundaries and plans) are reserved exclusively to licensed Ontario Land Surveyors. Commercial drone operations require a Transport Canada RPAS pilot certificate (Advanced operations for most survey work).

Designations in this profession

  • C.E.T.Certified Engineering Technologist (OACETT)
  • RPASTransport Canada RPAS pilot certificate: Required for commercial drone work

Insurance to expect

Carry professional liability (E&O) for the survey data you deliver and aviation/drone liability for flight operations. Data errors feed downstream design and construction, so accuracy carries real exposure.
