How to start an environmental consulting firm in Ontario

Environmental consultants assess and clean up the relationship between projects and the land — Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments, contaminated-site work, Records of Site Condition, and designated-substance surveys. It is a distinct business from the remediation trade: consultants assess and sign off; contractors do the cleanup.

The steps to start your practice

    Stand up your environmental consulting firm

    If the firm offers engineering, it needs a PEO Certificate of Authorization; geoscience work runs under P.Geo qualification. Carry professional liability (E&O) and pollution liability, incorporate, and build relationships with property owners, lenders, and developers who need ESAs before they transact or build.

    Most professionals incorporate to limit liability and for tax efficiency. Several regulated professions (architects, engineers) can form a professional corporation with a Certificate of Authorization — confirm the right entity type with your regulator before filing.

    Set up your CRA accounts

    Register for a Business Number, HST/GST (mandatory above $30,000 in revenue), payroll if you will hire, and corporate income tax. Professional service fees are HST-taxable.
