How to become an environmental consultant in Ontario

You become an environmental consultant through an environmental science or engineering degree, field experience in assessment and remediation, and — for the gated work — qualification as a P.Eng or P.Geo. The role spans engineers, geoscientists, biologists, and hydrogeologists.

The path, step by step

    Earn an environmental science or engineering degree

    Environmental engineering, geoscience/hydrogeology, or environmental science degrees are the common routes. The engineering and geoscience streams lead toward the Qualified Person roles.

    Build assessment and remediation experience

    Conduct Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, soil and groundwater sampling, designated-substance surveys, and remediation oversight under senior practitioners.

    Qualify as a P.Eng or P.Geo (for gated work)

    To act as a Qualified Person on contaminated sites and Records of Site Condition, you need a P.Eng (PEO) or P.Geo (APGO). This is the credential that unlocks the regulated, higher-value work.

The Qualified Person track

Getting in

An environmental science, geoscience/hydrogeology, environmental engineering, or biology degree → a junior consultant role (the field-grunt apprenticeship) → and, for the gated work, qualification as a P.Eng (PEO) or P.Geo (APGO). Geoscience and engineering streams lead toward the Qualified-Person authority; ecology/biology streams toward impact-assessment work. The first few years are field-heavy regardless.

Where it leads (and the way out)

Senior/principal, your own consulting practice, or laterally into government (MECP, conservation authorities), industry environmental roles (often better hours), or the remediation-contractor side. The Qualified-Person designation is the asset — it lets you sign the work that legally needs a QP, and it's the foundation of a practice. Many also move toward the steadier government and in-house roles to escape consulting's billable-hours grind.
