Environmental Consultant

Professional designation, not a licence

Environmental consultants assess and clean up the relationship between projects and the land — Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments, contaminated-site work, Records of Site Condition, and designated-substance surveys. It is a distinct business from the remediation trade: consultants assess and sign off; contractors do the cleanup.

The credential, explained

Environmental consulting is not a single licensed profession, but key work is gated. Contaminated-site assessment and Records of Site Condition under O. Reg. 153/04 must be overseen by a Qualified Person (QP) — a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng) or professional geoscientist (P.Geo). The MECP governs the contaminated-sites regime. A firm doing engineering needs a PEO Certificate of Authorization; pollution and professional liability insurance are standard.
