How to become a hazardous materials consultant in Ontario

You become a hazmat consultant from an environmental or occupational-health background, building the training and credentials to identify and assess designated substances and write compliant surveys. The demand is constant because every pre-1990s renovation and demolition needs a survey.

Getting in

From an environmental science, occupational health and safety, or building-science background, plus asbestos and hazmat training, building toward occupational-hygiene credentials (CRSP, and the more advanced CIH). You learn by doing surveys and air monitoring under senior consultants. There's no licence to do the surveys, but the credentials establish your competence — and clients (and the law) take the work seriously.

Where it leads (and the way out)

Senior/principal, your own hazmat-consulting practice (the legally mandated surveys give a reliable client base), or laterally into broader environmental consulting, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, or health-and-safety management. The regulatory knowledge is the asset — it transfers across the environmental and OHS worlds, and the CIH in particular opens doors well beyond construction.
