Designated Substance & Hazmat Consultant

Professional designation, not a licence

Designated-substance and hazmat consultants find what is hidden in a building before it is renovated or demolished — asbestos, lead, mould, silica, and other designated substances — and write the surveys the law requires before work starts. It is a distinct business from the abatement trade: consultants survey and specify; abatement crews remove.

The credential, explained

There is no licence for hazmat consulting, but the work is legally required: under Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act and O. Reg. 490/09, a designated-substance survey (DSS) must be completed before construction or demolition that could disturb asbestos, lead, mould, silica, and other designated substances (asbestos work also falls under O. Reg. 278/05). Consultants typically hold occupational-hygiene credentials (CRSP, CIH) and asbestos training; the assessment is the product.

Insurance to expect
