Construction Project Manager

Professional designation, not a licence

Construction project management is the most accessible of the built-environment professions — there is no licence and no mandatory degree. The recognized credentials are Gold Seal Certification (Canadian Construction Association) and the globally recognized PMP, both earned mainly through experience.

The credential, explained

Construction/project management is not a regulated profession — no licence or reserved title. Credibility comes from experience plus a recognized credential: Gold Seal Certified (GSC) from the Canadian Construction Association, built on industry credits and at least five years of experience; or the Project Management Professional (PMP) from PMI, the global standard. Neither is legally required, but owners and employers increasingly expect one.

Designations in this profession

  • GSCGold Seal Certified: CCA construction-management certification
  • PMPProject Management Professional (PMI): Global project-management credential

Insurance to expect

A project-management consultancy carries professional liability (E&O) for the advice and oversight it provides, plus commercial general liability if you have a site presence. If you carry construction-management-at-risk contracts, your exposure rises toward a contractor's and bonding may be required.
