How to become a civil engineer in Ontario

You become a civil engineer by earning your P.Eng (the shared licensure path is in the Professional Engineer playbook) and specializing in land development, municipal, or water-resources work. Most learn the approvals game on real subdivision and site-plan projects.

The path, step by step

    Earn a CEAB-accredited civil engineering degree

    A civil engineering degree covers hydrology, geotechnical basics, transportation, and municipal infrastructure — the grounding for land-development practice.

Getting in

A civil engineering degree → EIT under licensed civils → P.Eng. The discipline is broad, so where you land your first job (land development, municipal, water, transportation) tends to shape your specialty. Land-development experience — learning how municipalities and conservation authorities review and approve — is some of the most marketable.

Where it leads (and the way out)

Senior/principal, project or development management (civils make strong developers and PMs because they understand servicing and approvals), public-sector management, or your own land-development consultancy. The approvals knowledge is genuinely valuable — civils who can move a project through a municipality are always in demand.
