Civil Engineer

Civil (land development) engineers design what makes land buildable — grading, roads, stormwater, water and sewer servicing, and the municipal approvals behind them. It is the engineering business closest to development: developers and municipalities are the clients.

The credential, explained

Civil engineering is practised under a P.Eng licence. Land-development work runs through municipal site-plan and subdivision approvals, the Ontario Provincial Standards (OPS), stormwater and grading requirements, and conservation-authority and MECP permits. A firm offering services to the public needs a PEO Certificate of Authorization and professional liability insurance.
