About becoming an acoustics consultant
Through a physics, engineering, or architecture background — usually with graduate study or specialization in acoustics (a master's is common, and more available overseas, so many Canadian acousticians trained abroad). You then learn on the job under a senior consultant and join the Canadian Acoustical Association (with INCE certification for some). It's a "fall into it" field — almost nobody plans an acoustics career at 18 — but for the technically inclined it's a fascinating, stable niche.
Environmental noise (planning noise studies under NPC-300) is the bread-and-butter, because nearly every residential development needs one to get approved — steady and approvals-driven. Architectural acoustics (rooms, performance spaces, schools, condos) is the design-collaborative, quality-of-space work. Industrial/vibration is the technical, higher-stakes specialty. Most consultancies do environmental noise as the reliable base and architectural or industrial as the interesting differentiator.
Often, yes — acoustics is technical and rarely taught deeply at the undergraduate level, so a master's (or strong specialized experience) is common for consultants. The math and physics are real. That said, people do enter from engineering or physics bachelors and learn on the job under senior acousticians. If you're serious about the field, a master's smooths the path and is the norm among trained acousticians.
Small, but stable precisely because it's small — the chronic shortage of trained acousticians means experienced people are always in demand, can command premiums, and can sustain their own small practices. You're not going to find thousands of jobs, but you'll rarely struggle to find one, and the niche protects you from the commoditization that hits bigger fields. Scarcity is the career story, much like land surveying and quantity surveying.
Yes — the scarcity makes a small, specialized firm viable. Environmental noise studies for developers (a recurring approvals requirement) are the reliable anchor; architectural and industrial work is the higher-value differentiator. You need the technical credibility (CAA/INCE, and a P.Eng where the work is engineering), measurement equipment and modelling software, and E&O insurance. It's a lean, expertise-driven practice with steady underlying demand.

Not necessarily — acoustics consulting is not a licensed profession, and practitioners come from engineering and physics backgrounds with CAA or INCE credentials. But where the work constitutes engineering (and especially where studies are stamped), a P.Eng and a PEO Certificate of Authorization are required.
Build acoustics experience on a technical (engineering/physics) base, establish standing through the CAA/INCE (and P.Eng where applicable), and carry professional liability (E&O). Planning-driven noise studies for developers are the steady core; relationships with planners and architects feed the pipeline.
Regulated professionals (architects, engineers) can often form a professional corporation, which carries specific naming and ownership rules and ties to your regulator's firm authorization. Unregulated professionals (quantity surveyors, project managers) incorporate like any business. Either way, incorporating limits personal liability and can reduce tax once you are profitable — confirm the right structure with your regulator first.
Professional liability (errors & omissions) insurance is the core coverage — it responds to claims from your advice, designs, or certifications, and is a firm-authorization requirement for regulated professions. Add commercial general liability, and cyber/contents coverage for your office.
Yes — professional services are HST-taxable in Ontario. You must register for and charge HST once revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive quarters, and many register sooner to claim input tax credits on software, equipment, and office costs.
