Your provisional C of Q is expiring: what happens and what to do

If you have just opened a notice and your stomach dropped, start here. This is the short version, and the first thing to know is that people get through this every year, including people with less time left than you have.

And how he got there, which is the ordinary way rather than a careless one:

"So I failed my 309A exam by two points when I came out of school, and then was a lazy pos afterwards. Thinking there was no time limit, I put it off for a few months, and then a few months turned into 7-8 months..."

Two points. Then seven months, because nothing told him a clock was running. That is the actual failure mode, and it is administrative rather than technical.

Today, in order

1. Find your real date. Not roughly. The date on the certificate. Everything below is measured from it.

2. Book the exam before you study. Booking is the part with the queue in it, and the queue is not yours to control. One person in the corpus waited two months for a booking code. A seat you can move is worth more than a week of revision.

3. Count backwards from the seat, not forwards from today. Sitting the exam is not the finish line, the result is, and results take time to arrive. If your seat is three weeks out and your certificate has eight weeks left, that is the whole picture and it is tight but workable.

4. Tell your employer today, not in the last fortnight. They have seen this before, and in a compulsory trade the exposure is theirs as well as yours. The conversation is much easier at eight weeks than at two.

5. Ask STO, in writing, what your options are if the date passes. Whether a provisional can be extended, how many attempts you get and in what window, and what happens between an expiry and a pass are all things they set and change. Get the answer for your case in writing with a reference number rather than from a forum, including this page. 6. Study the failure, not the trade. People fail this by one or two points, which means the gap is usually narrow and specific: the code book index, one calculation, one section. The Last Mile to C of Q guides are per trade and written for exactly that gap.

Never being here again

The reason this page exists is that the notice arrives too late to be useful. The date was knowable the whole time.

Put the date in once and it counts down in front of you, with a warning window you set. Ninety days is the right setting for a provisional, because ninety days is roughly what a booking plus a seat plus a result actually costs when it goes badly.

Get your dates from STO, in writing

How long your provisional runs, whether it can be extended, how many attempts you have and what each costs are set by regulation and by Skilled Trades Ontario, and they change.

Ask STO directly and get the answer in writing, then put that date somewhere that will warn you. This is your right to work; it is worth one phone call and a written reply rather than a number you half-remember from a forum.
